Verb Conjugations

Portuguese verb conjugations are  structured very systematically, as they follow certain patterns much as in mathematics. In this sense, once you remember the formula, you can almost always plug in the correct tense for the right situation, and pronto, you will have the correct response. This is not to say that Portuguese verb conjugations are not going to give you problems, by no means. The possible exceptions to this system are the irregular verbs, and are for good or bad, the most frequently used. First of all, Portuguese verbs consist of three types: ar (most common), er (second most common), and ir (the least used). If you serious about learning Portuguese, a great investment would be Barron's 501 Portuguese Verbs.

*The verbs estar and ser are both irregular and mean to be. The distinction between the two is that estar is used in temporary is conditional. Ser is used for permanent ones. This is a general rule that applies with the majority only.

*Tenses in the we form generally do not change for the past and present. You will find relative dialogue leading up to that will indicate whether they speaker/writer in addressing the present or past preterite.

*Ficar is a regular verb and used quite frequently, meaning to stay and to be in the temporary form. It has a similar meaning as estar in this sense, except that it is used with specific examples.
